Firefighter Cancer Support Network

Florida Professional Firefighters, District Two would like to ask for your help on a matter of critical importance to all of us.
You are well aware, cancer and other life-threatening diseases have taken a great toll on the brave members of our proud profession. Year after year, we find firefighters taken from us far too early. Job related cancers and other diseases have become the "silent killers" of the fire service and we are now asking for your help.
Our District has joined forces with all Districts of the Florida Professional Firefighters to form an organization called the Firefighter’s Cancer Support Network, Florida Chapter.
This organization is affiliated with the Firefighter Cancer Support Network, http://firefightercancersupport.org, which was begun to assist those members who are in vital need of information and mentoring throughout their disease process. Additionally, we want to foster the prevention and early detection of cancers, as well as other life-threatening diseases occurring in firefighters through scientific research and education.
One of the first steps that we need to take is to get vital information from both our active and retired members to identify the specific cancers and other life-threatening diseases that we have developed and secondly to identify members in need of our immediate support. We also need to work with our retirees and determine what our former members have died from to more accurately gauge what are our primary causes of death are, for example: cancer and the specific type, cardiac, self-inflicted, MVA’s, etc.
This information will be also used to assist us in developing the guidelines for our support website, as well as the vital information that we may be able to use to fight for future Cancer Presumption Laws and changes in the way we protect ourselves.
Your participation may help to save a life, maybe even YOURS!
Attached you will find our Cancer Survey and Member Assistance Questionnaires
PLEASE NOTE: THAT WHILE THIS IS TOTALLY OPTIONAL ON YOUR PART, THE MORE ACCURATE THE DATA WE RECEIVE, THE MORE ACCURATE OUR REPORTS WILL BE.
YOUR NAME WILL BE REMOVED FROM ALL REPORTS, UNLESS YOU HAVE AGREED TO ASSIST AND/OR MENTOR AS NOTED IN THE SURVEY
Go to "Downloads" under "Member Resources" to download forms to fill out for current and retired members.

Forms can be returned to Keith Tyson or you can get in touch with me and I'll make sure they get back to him.

Take care,
Macho L.

FCSN Letter to FPF Members

Florida Firefighter Cancer Survey

Collected for the

Firefighter Cancer Support Network, Florida Chapter

First of all, I want to thank each and every member who supported this project at the FPF convention in Orlando.

The primary reason for starting the Firefighter Cancer Support Network, Florida Chapter is to provide a central place for members who have been diagnosed with Cancer to call and get information on what to expect as well as being paired with someone who has been thru the same issues and can give the newly diagnosed member some hope and assistance in understanding what to expect in the future.

To do this we need to conduct a survey of members who have been treated for any type of cancer. Please review the Florida Firefighter Cancer Survey. This survey needs to be sent to ALL members, both active AND RETIRED! Obviously, there will be members that may not want to fill out the info or return the form. Possibly if they understand that importance of what we are doing and why we are collecting it, may help, and we need to assure them that their name will never be revealed in any report, but it is the only way to confirm and validate data received. This form needs to be ultimately returned to me, either by fax, mail or email, whichever is easiest for your union reps.

The second form, The Member Assistance Program form, is designed to be used in the following manner. Let’s say I have received a call from a member, who lives outside of the area of his home local / department, and they request some type of assistance due to a serious illness, possibly mowing their yard, they need a ride to a Dr’s office, maybe something more complicated. Ideally, I should to be able to contact the DVP for that area, advise him of what that member needs, and then they can contact the local or locals in the immediate area. Those local reps can then either go thru their database, or paperwork, and make calls to their members and get assistance to the requesting members. This really is nothing different than many of us have done for our brothers and sisters before, but now we are trying to make it easier for all to access.

ADDITIONALLY, I STRONGLY feel that we, like our brothers and sisters in 31 other states, NEED a Cancer Presumption Law, BUT to do this we need to provide HARD NUMBERS AND FACTS! It will require a lot of work from every Local and will take time to pull the numbers together both for you, and ultimately for me. So let me explain what I need and why!
